Meet the Founders

Brian Alan Carroll

Brian is currently a doctoral student in the Applied Linguistics program at Teachers College, Columbia University, focusing on second language assessment. He is also a Community English Program Teaching Fellow at Teachers College. Previously, he held the position Technology Fellow at Teachers College based on his prior experience as Head of Teaching and Technology at Embassy CES, Study Group in New York City. Brian most recently taught English for Academic Purposes for the English Language Institute at City College of New York. He has also taught Integrated Skills ESL in St. Petersburg, Russia, New York City, and most recently Pragmatic Awareness and Comprehension in Taipei, Taiwan. Brian’s main areas of interest include language assessment, neurocognition, and leveraging technology to aid classroom practices.

Elliott Goodman

Elliott is a National Board Certified Teacher, currently serving as Lead Teacher at a high school in the Los Angeles Unified School District. He began teaching middle and high school in 2007 in Los Angeles before joining the Ed.M. program in TESOL and Applied Linguistics at Teachers College. There he worked with English Language Learners and studied the science of designing effective assessments and acquiring content through language instruction, while also administering the National Latin Survey. After graduate school, Elliott taught high school at a public school in Brooklyn and then provided professional development opportunities at a non-profit, English in Action, and ran the Middle School Public Debate Program. He won a Fulbright Grant to study at the American Academy in Rome and is an alumnus of the Klingenstein Summer Institute and the University of Chicago.

Meet Team Tiro

Greg Thompson

Greg wrote the first line of code that brought Tiro to life. He is a developer with 10+ years of experience.  Greg has worked in various development roles in large and small companies.  Passionate about teaching, Greg has spent 2 years as a volunteer in the ScriptEd Program, where he tutored high school students interested in computer science.

Silvia Barragán

Silvia is a multi-disciplinary graphic designer. She has been working in the design industry for over seven years with hand-on experience in print and digital design, marketing design, branding, and advertising. Her past clients include Bayer, General Electric, Apple, Kimberly-Clark, Mercer, among others.

She has recently specialized in User experience (UX) and User interface (UI). She seeks to understand the user, iterate processes, and redefine problems in order to identify optimal solutions. Her passion lies in working with startups to create user-friendly desktop and mobile applications.

Jason Kraemer

Jason leads sales & marketing at Tiro. He has been working in sales & marketing for over 7 years, largely with early stage startups. In 2019 he co-founded Flashpacker Co, an e-commerce business geared towards long term travelers. When he’s not focused on building go-to-market strategies for startups you can find him around the world searching for the best beaches, the tastiest tacos, or the most exciting dive sites.
